The team is the unit, not the org chart
You don't need an enterprise agreement or an IT project to work together. A team is a workspace: shared corpus, shared taxonomy, shared review queue — and it exists on its own, with or without a parent organization above it.
Shared corpus
Everyone's studies feed the same evidence base. Themes form across people, not just across one person's projects — which is the whole reason to be a team rather than five solos.
A review step that holds
Scaling a team usually means quality drifts. Triage puts every proposed insight in front of a person before it joins the shared corpus, so the bar doesn't move when the headcount does.
Visible governance
Who is reviewing what, which project has which policy, and what state each study is in — on one screen, so the lead doesn't have to ask around to find out where things stand.
Stop being a lookup service
A PM asks whether you researched something. A researcher stops, opens two old studies, finds three quotes, writes a paragraph, and loses an hour. The answer helps one person once and is never findable again.
They ask the corpus directly and get an answer with citations they can open themselves. The researcher hears about it only when the follow-up is actually a research question — which is the conversation worth having.
That's why non-researcher seats aren't priced per head
Research only pays off when it's referenced. Charging per PM is a tax on the exact behaviour you want, so Explorer seats come bundled with the researchers who generate the work, and read-only Viewers are free.

When your study contradicts a teammate's from two quarters ago, Umwelt raises it as something to resolve. Without it, both findings simply coexist and the org quietly believes two incompatible things.
Themes that outlive their author
A theme carries its participants and its age, independent of who built it. When someone leaves, their conclusions stay legible and checkable instead of becoming folklore.
What onboarding actually looks like
Umwelt is in private beta and we onboard teams one at a time — which means a real person helps you load a first batch of studies and sits with you through the first review pass. That is not a support tier, it is just how we are running the beta.
Uploading is manual today: audio files, PDFs, docs and transcripts, dragged in. There is no importer for Dovetail, Notion or Drive yet, and we would rather say so than let you discover it in week two.
